The prediction market platform Kalshi has imposed its first lifetime trading ban on former U.S. Congressman George Santos and fined him over $70,000. Santos was accused of betting on whether he would attend the Trump State of the Union address related contracts, subsequently making false or misleading statements in an attempt to influence contract prices, and failing to cooperate with the investigation. This is one of five enforcement cases announced by Kalshi, with the other four receiving only temporary bans due to cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has also fined former White House teleprompter operator Gabriel Perez over $170,000 and imposed a three-year trading ban for using information from his White House job to bet on contracts mentioning specific words during Trump's speeches.Competitor Polymarket has stated that it has established systems for identifying suspicious trading through machine learning, blockchain analysis, trading monitoring, and open-source research, and has referred over 100 cases to authorities, including incidents involving U.S. soldiers using confidential information to bet on the arrest of Venezuelan leaders. As the U.S. midterm elections approach, regulatory scrutiny of the prediction market industry is increasing.
