Are US dollars accepted in Malaysia?

Could you please clarify for me if US dollars are generally accepted as a form of payment in Malaysia? I'm planning a trip there and I'm curious about the local currency situation. Do businesses and establishments often accept US dollars directly, or is it more common to use the local currency, the Malaysian ringgit?
