Why can't you buy SPX?

Excuse me, but I'm a bit confused. I've been hearing a lot about SPX lately and I'm interested in investing in it. However, I've come across some barriers when trying to purchase it. Could you please explain why I can't buy SPX? Is it due to some regulatory restrictions, or is it simply not available for retail investors like me?
